Japan Images: Ueno By Night

by zonjineko on November 11, 2009

in photos

These images were taken in and around JR Ueno train station and along Ameyako in Ueno, Tokyo. It was my first night shoot with the Canon 5D Mark II, which I had picked up a few days earlier at Yodobashi in Akihabara.

I used a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS USM lens for all shots and the images were processed in Lightroom 2 on OSX.

Downtime

Downtime

A taxi driver reads as he waits for a fare near JR Ueno train station in Tokyo. And no it didn’t look like that – I have pulled the orange/red colour out of this for effect (^_^)

Ameyoko

Ameyoko

Ameyayokocho, or Ameyoko (アメ横) as it is shortened to in the sign here, is a well-known street market located alongside and under the railway line through Ueno, Tokyo.

End Of The Day

End Of The Day

The once crowded, narrow streets of the Ameyako are mostly deserted as the time comes to close up for the night. Above the shops on the left are the Ueno railway lines.

Buzzing

Buzzing

Streets still buzzing at 9pm on a Monday in Ueno, Tokyo. Back home in Australia, we’d be lucky to see one shop open and maybe a taxi at this hour

Taxi Lights

Taxi Lights

I love to check out all the different lights adorning the taxis in Japan. Unlike back home, there seem to be so many to choose from.

Homeless

Homeless

I was surprised by the number of homeless people around Ueno and particularly at the JR Ueno station. Maybe the global financial issues have forced up the numbers lately.

Pedestrians

Pedestrians

Pedestrians illuminated by construction works (hidden to the right) as they await a green light. What looks like a roof is actually the above-ground Ueno railway line.

A vendor tending to another fresh batch of…well whatever they are. I am not quite sure what these are but they smelt great as I walked past.

Nightime Vending

Nightime Vending

Whatever the time of day or night, vending machines can sooth the 24/7 shopper’s needs. Featured on the right is Marimokkori (まりもっこり), a popular doll with an unusual feature. I’ll leave you to work out what it is.

I’ve only recently found your site, and I’m very glad I did. Its been almost 2 years since my wife and I went to Japan, and I miss it every day. Your site and posts like this one help me remember the atmosphere and culture that eludes me every day. Thank you and keep up the great work!
