Japan Vocab: Weather Words

Visiting Japan and want to discuss the weather with the locals? Studying to become a meteorologist?

Or maybe you’re just looking for a few lame hook up lines for a new Japanese girlfriend.

These weather-based words will make sure you’re good to go at any time.

Weather Words

こさめ 小雨 light rain, drizzle

しも frost
すずしい 涼しい cool
たいふう 台風 typhoon
つゆ 露  dew
つゆ 梅雨 rainy season
そら sky
てんき 天気 weather
てんきよほう 天気予報 weather forecast
でんこう 電光 lightning
なつ summer
なんぷう 軟風 breeze
にじ rainbow
はる spring, spring time
はれ 晴れ clear weather
hail
ひでり 日照り dry weather, drought
ひょうてん 氷点 freezing
ふぶき 吹雪 snow storm, blizzard
ふゆ winter
ぼうふう 暴風 storm, gale
むしあつい 蒸し暑い humid
もや mist, haze
ゆき snow

As in any language, there are many words that can be described in several different ways (eg cool, cold, crisp, fresh, frosty, brisk, frigid – all mean much the same thing).

I have tried to include the most common word in this list but it is by no means comprehensive.

    Nice list! Makes me realize how many weather words I don’t know yet…

    One suggestion, though – I might recommend 空 (そら) for sky instead of 天. I think てん is more often used to mean “heaven” or “the heavens.”

    冰(ひ)はあまり使わないですね。 中国語ではつかっているようですが。

    氷(ひょう/こおり)=hail 霰(あられ)=hail 

    上記が一般的です。
